Woolworths NZ Cookies Statement
About this statement
The references in this statement to ‘Woolworths NZ’, ‘Woolworths’, ‘we’, ‘our’ or ‘us’ refers to Woolworths New Zealand Limited (and its subsidiary companies). Woolworths NZ owns and manages the various Woolworths branded supermarkets and Metro stores, including Woolworths NZ Online Shopping, our websites or mobile apps and the Everyday Rewards loyalty programme in New Zealand. It also refers to Woolworths pharmacies, which operate in many of our supermarkets.
This statement explains what cookies are and how we use them. This is relevant when you use your computer or mobile device to visit online content (such as websites and mobile apps) which display or promote our businesses or brands, or our goods or services. The content may be our own, or it may be the content of others in which we have an interest, like in our banner advertisements.
Cookies may be arranged (“set”) on our websites by us or by others we have an arrangement with, like companies whose business it is to analyse information. We may also access information from these cookies set by others (“3rd party cookies”).
What is a cookie?
Cookies are small pieces of information captured when your device is used to access online content. Cookies are stored in your device by the person who arranges for the cookie to be set. This person may be the provider of the content being accessed or it might be a 3rd party. 3rd party cookies are used to provide information about your device’s access to more than one discrete site or data set.
Why should you know about cookies?
You should know about cookies because they involve the collection of information about you (which may or may not be personal information) in a way which may not be obvious to you.
The information we collect through cookies may not identify, or relate, to a particular individual. Generally, the information collected through cookies relates to a device used to access online content, like an IP address, or location data about the device. Cookies may also collect information about the behaviours of the user of the device, such as the websites visited by the user and their activity on the website.
Why do we allow cookies to be used?
We allow cookies to be used for three reasons:
First, we allow session cookies to be used when you visit our online content. This enables your device to move from page to page without having to sign in repeatedly. These generally improve your browsing experience.
Secondly, we allow persistent and (permanent) cookies to be used to better inform how the content your device visits may be presented to you on the device you are using. Persistent cookies can store your preferences for a particular site, so they will be remembered when the site is visited again for a limited period of time. Permanent cookies can store your preferences and information until they are deleted from your device.
Thirdly, we use other tracking technologies (like pixels, beacons and tags) to record your behaviour and activities when you visit our website(s) for the purpose of analytics and targeted online advertising.
Collecting this information allows us to:
- Assess marketing activities like which promotions to send to you, when and how.
- Send you tailored advertising about products and services that may interest you. You may receive tailored advertising on digital environments and platforms you visit (like websites or apps) in the form of digital advertising, or on the social media sites you use.
- Measure the effectiveness of promotions.
- Identify and fix pain points for you and others when using our website(s), so we can provide a better, more personalised experience.
What are your choices about cookies?
You can control the extent to which your device allows cookies to be set on it. You can do this by changing the settings on the software your device uses to access the internet (your browser software). For example, depending on which browser your device uses, you may be able to disable 3rd party cookies. If you configure your settings to disable session and certain persistent cookies, you may find that the websites you visit have limited functionality.
You can also control the extent to which you receive the tailored advertising that cookies enable by changing your settings on the websites on which you receive tailored advertising. For example, you can disable tailored advertising on social media sites like Facebook by changing the settings on your Facebook account.
Please note that you may need to opt out separately from each device you use to access online content.
Opting out of cookies may not necessarily remove all advertising from pages you visit. Instead, it may mean that the ads you see will not reflect your interests.
