Community

Every year, through the Woolworths Food for Good Foundation (formerly the Countdown Food for Good Foundation), we donate more than $7 million in food, funding and local sponsorship to communities across the country. Find out more about the foundation's mission and values, what we’ve achieved in the last year, and our current priorities.

Using food for good

It’s a privilege to be in the business of food in Aotearoa New Zealand. We’re a proud part of 189 communities, and an employer of 21,000 hard-working Kiwi. We work closely with local farmers, growers, and businesses big and small, to feed the 3 million Kiwi who shop with us every week.

But being a good business goes beyond that. It’s about looking after our most vulnerable New Zealanders, and protecting our precious environment for the long term. It’s about all Kiwi having the opportunity to thrive. It’s about using food for good.

Our mission

Connecting Kiwi communities and whānau by feeding the future today.

Our values

  • We use food for good. We use our resources, size and skills to support New Zealanders, our communities and our environment.
  • We collaborate. We work alongside our communities, suppliers, partners and customers to understand and help meet the needs of Kiwi to enable us all to thrive.
  • We believe in the greater good. We recognise that as a large business and employer, we have an important role to play in helping to contribute to a better and healthier Aotearoa.
  • We are future-focussed. We make decisions today that will deliver a better tomorrow.

How we’re helping

The Woolworths Food For Good Foundation aims to make a difference around a single focus: helping Kiwi to thrive by building a stronger, healthier New Zealand for the future. Each year we donate more than $7 million in food, funding and local sponsorship for our communities.

In August 2023, we announced an additional $1.5 million to our food rescue and food welfare partners to support those Kiwi most affected by the cost of living and climate crises.

With the demand for food support by Kiwi families at an all time high, we provided immediate support to our charity partners working on the frontline including KidsCan, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch City Missions and The Salvation Army.

We also provided additional investment in our partner food rescue organisations to continue their important work diverting surplus food to those most in need.

Free fruit for kids

Since 2015, we've provided free fruit for kids in our stores, giving them a free, healthy snack to eat while they shop with their parents. We give away about 50,000 pieces of fruit each week. That's around 10 million pieces of fruit since the programme began.

Local store sponsorship and donations

We serve more than three million Kiwi each week, with stores in 189 communities throughout Aotearoa. That means we have our finger on the pulse of what matters to our customers and their families.

We want to be a good neighbour, supporting the communities we live and work in. So we use food for good, whether that's donating food through food rescue, supporting a local school with a sausage sizzle, or providing free fruit for kids at the local sports field.

Foundation governance

The Woolworths Food for Good Foundation sets the strategic direction for Woolworths’ charitable, community and philanthropic activities. This includes things like our partnerships with The Salvation Army and KidsCan, and our food rescue programme with charity partners across New Zealand.

The Woolworths Food for Good Trust is responsible for charitable activities of the Foundation. The Trust is overseen by three trustees, who come from across the Woolworths business, and administers grants in accordance with its Trust Deed. 100% of funds raised will be donated to charitable causes.

The Woolworths Food for Good Trust has applied for charitable status with Charity Services New Zealand.

Our partnerships

Woolworths food rescue funding grant

We aim to have all food waste from our operations diverted from landfill by 2025, starting with our supermarkets. We've partnered with food rescue organisations across the country since 2011, donating any of our unsold, edible food. Together, we've saved more than 5000 tonnes of food going to landfill every year. We've also given more than $2 million to help our food rescue partners expand their operations.

There are now more than 25 food rescue organisations across Aotearoa. We want to make sure they can continue their great work and support us to meet our zero food waste goal. To help make sure they are set up for success, we started our Food Rescue Partners Fund. Our partners can apply for funding through this programme every year.

Our partnerships - Growing for good

Growing for good

Each year, schools throughout New Zealand apply to Woolworths' Growing for Good programme to help them undertake sustainability projects - with a focus on combating climate change and an aim to encourage our next generation of environmentalists to turn their passion into action.

Our partnerships - The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is our largest charity partner. We work together across Aotearoa through food rescue and The Foodbank Project to help keep their foodbanks stocked and ready to help people in need.

As well as food donations, we also help The Salvation Army raise money through public appeals. These donations go towards food parcels and other support services for vulnerable Kiwis, especially during winter and Christmas.
