Purchase of Mariners Mall by Woolworths New Zealand
19 March 2024: Woolworths New Zealand is pleased to announce the purchase of Mariners Mall in Picton from its long standing owners, the Hagaman family.
The late Earl Hagaman first visited Picton in early 1984 and fell in love with the destination. He described standing at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound and being confronted by the panorama of striking and largely unrecognised beauty. He believed Picton had substantial potential. He commenced the plans for a supermarket in Picton which ultimately led to the full development of Mariners Mall consisting of the supermarket, 21 shops and 10 offices. In 1987 he opened the Mall with great fanfare with over 200 people joining in the celebrations. It was his hope the Mall would contribute to the success of Picton’s future.
Lani Hagaman (Earl’s wife) says “Over the years retail trends have changed and while it is with a touch of sadness we now sell the Mall, it is also with excited anticipation that we pass the ownership of Mariners Mall to Woolworths New Zealand for them to bring added vibrancy to the Picton region.”
Woolworths has a strong connection with the site, as the franchisor of the FreshChoice supermarket which has operated at Mariners Mall since 1987. Hamish and Heide Watson, the franchisees for FreshChoice Picton, have served the local community since 2013, and Heide’s family connection to the store dates back to the opening in 1987.
Mariners Mall is a landmark property in Picton and Woolworths New Zealand is excited to be a part of the next chapter of its history.
Woolworths New Zealand’s Director of Property, Matthew Grainger, says Picton is a special part of the country and the grocery retailer is looking forward to investing further in the local community.
“The Hagaman family have an incredible legacy in the local community and we feel honoured that they’re passing the baton over to us with the purchase of Mariners Mall. At this stage nothing is changing, but as we get further into our planning we’ll be sure to share more with the community.”
