Lion Red, the quintessential Kiwi beer, began life as the Pale Ale from the Great Northern Brewery in 1907 – a great year for beer and an even better one for beer drinkers. Over the last century, Lion Red has become a favourite for celebrating great times with good mates.
Originally known as ‘Lion Beer’ the brand became know to the public as ‘Lion Red’ which aptly described its red-coloured label and can. Lion Breweries responded by officially changing the brand’s name to Lion Red in the mid 1980s.
Brewed in New Zealand since 1907, Lion Red is a full-bodied malt flavoured beer balanced with a hop bitterness. It has a malty aroma followed by a soft fermented estery sweetness. Cleansing bitterness and sweet malt notes dominate rather than hops.
